Nicole’s Story

I Didn’t Grow Up “Good at Math.”

I Grew Up Learning How My Brain Actually Works.

I’ll be honest — I hated math growing up.

I was a Literature major. I avoided numbers whenever possible. In college, I stacked all of my math and science requirements into one brutal year just to get them over with — and it was one of the hardest academic years of my life.

But something interesting happened.

While I struggled with chemistry lectures and exams, I aced every single chemistry lab. Same subject. Same semester. Completely different outcome.

One professor finally said something that changed everything for me:

Your brain works differently — and that’s not a weakness.

They explained that I was likely neurodivergent, and that my brain processed complex information best when my hands were involved. When learning was tactile. When I could do, not just listen.

That insight stuck with me.

Puzzles Were Always My Thing

Long before I understood learning styles or brain science, I loved puzzles.

Those small wooden and metal brain teasers from Barnes & Noble? I asked for them every birthday. I didn’t realize it at the time, but puzzles gave my brain what worksheets never could — engagement, pattern recognition, and satisfaction.

Eventually, I found my way to a Rubik’s Cube.

This was before modern speed cubes existed. No magnets. No buttery turns. Just stiff, unforgiving plastic. I taught myself how to solve it without algorithms or formal methods — and even managed a 21-second personal best at a local competition on one of those ancient cubes.

Then life happened.

Careers. Responsibilities. Adulthood.

The cube went into a drawer for over a decade.
